Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has sent heartfelt wishes to Muslim faithful as they begin the holy month of Ramadan, encouraging them to show kindness and support to those in need.
Taking to his official X page on Saturday, the governor highlighted the significance of the holy month, describing it as a period for profound reflection, strengthened faith, and selfless acts of kindness.
In his message, Sanwo-Olu encouraged Nigerians to uphold the principles of compassion, unity, and generosity while praying for continued progress and harmony across Lagos and beyond.
He wrote, “Ramadan Kareem to all our Muslim brothers and sisters. This sacred month is a time for deep reflection, renewed faith, and acts of kindness. May your fasting and prayers bring you peace, prosperity, and abundant blessings.
“As we embrace the values of compassion, unity, and generosity, let us uplift one another and extend love to those in need. Lagos is a home for all, and in this season of devotion, we pray for continued progress and harmony in our state and beyond.”
Ramadan, one of Islam’s five pillars, is a period of fasting observed by healthy adult Muslims worldwide.
However, exemptions are made for young children, the sick, travelers, and women who are pregnant, nursing, or menstruating.
For centuries, Muslims have relied on the sighting of the crescent moon to mark the beginning of Ramadan, as well as the two major Islamic celebrations, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
During this time, working hours for both public and private sector employees, as well as school schedules, are often adjusted to accommodate fasting and religious observances.
