In a significant restructuring of Nigeria’s federal ministries, President Bola Tinubu has dissolved the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development.
The decision, approved during a Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, was announced by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President.
In a statement shared on Wednesday, Onanuga revealed that the new Ministry of Regional Development would now oversee the activities of regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission.
He explained, “There will now be a Ministry of Regional Development to oversee all the regional development commissions, such as Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, North East Development Commission.”
The responsibilities of the Ministry of Sports Development will be transferred to the National Sports Commission, which will now take charge of sports management across the country.
“The National Sports Commission will take over the role of the Ministry of Sports,” Onanuga confirmed.
Additionally, the FEC endorsed the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, creating a unified ministry to boost the nation’s cultural and tourism sectors.
