The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed reports of an armed robbery attack at Eleyin village along the Ilorin-Omu-Aran road, clarifying that the incident was a misunderstanding rather than a criminal act.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the command refuted claims that any robbery took place on Sunday.
According to the police, the incident involved a disagreement between a vehicle owner and some local youths after his car broke down on the road.
“At about 1800hrs on February 9, 2025, the Divisional Police Officer of Oke-Onigbin received a distress call from one Ibrahim Sai of Eleyin village, who reported a suspected robbery,” the statement read.
Following the report, officers from Omu-Aran and Oke-Onigbin divisions were swiftly dispatched to the scene.
However, upon arrival, they discovered that the disturbance was caused by a dispute between the vehicle owner and some youths demanding ‘owo ilè’ (land use fee).
“This fracas was mistaken for an armed robbery by other road users and bystanders. On sighting police operatives, the unarmed youths fled the scene. No robbery occurred, and the area remains very calm,” the police stated.
The command also cautioned the public against spreading unverified reports, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring security in the state.
“The Kwara police command urges the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and assures its continued commitment to securing lives and properties of Kwarans,” the statement added.
Residents were advised to report emergencies through the command’s hotline numbers: 0812 527 5046 and 0703 206 9501.
