Anambra State’s security outfit, Agunechemba, has taken into custody a well-known native doctor, Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly called Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki.
The controversial spiritualist, known for his lavish lifestyle and social media presence, was reportedly arrested on Saturday at his base in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area. Following his arrest, he was taken to the office of the state’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyeka Ibezim, for questioning.
A statement on the Anambra State government’s official X handle (formerly Twitter) confirmed the development, stating: “Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki n’Oba denies Oke Ite and has been detained for further investigation by the security agency.”
Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki gained widespread attention for promoting “Oke Ite,” a ritual he claimed could bring unlimited wealth. However, during his interrogation, he denied any involvement in such practices.
“I have long stopped doing ‘Oke Ite,’” he stated in a viral video of the questioning. “That thing is not a charm. We just gave it the name ‘Oke Ite’ because we put it in a pot. In Igbo language, ‘Oke Ite’ means big pot.”
In the same footage, Dr. Ibezim referenced the newly enacted Anambra Homeland Security Law, stressing the need for a thorough investigation. Addressing the security team, he said: “Guys, you have heard him. We need to take him to where he does these things. We will investigate him, and of course, we need to know where he does these things. If he cannot prove it, he will have to go in for it.”
The arrest comes months after Akwa Okuko was kidnapped in July 2023. Reports at the time suggested he spent several days in captivity and secured his release after allegedly paying a ransom.
