The Nigeria Police Force has arrested two political thugs during a late-night operation across several locations in Edo State, ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
This was revealed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a press statement on Saturday.
According to Adejobi, the police recovered three cut-to-size locally made pistols and one additional locally fabricated firearm from the suspects, identified as 43-year-old Edwin Obanor and 41-year-old Audu Tajudeen.
The latter is reportedly a member of the People’s Democratic Party from Ugbogbo quarters, Igara Akoko, Edo.
Adejobi explained that the arrests were based on a tip-off that some individuals had been armed to disrupt the upcoming election.
He noted that Obanor, described as the leader of an armed group, was apprehended at Oredo Ward 4 around 9 p.m., while Tajudeen was arrested in Igara Akoko, also on the eve of the election.
“Upon searching the bags in their possession, three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols were discovered on Obanor, while one locally made gun was recovered from Tajudeen,” Adejobi said.
He emphasized that these arrests highlight the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
“The police and other supporting security agencies will not tolerate any form of violence or disorderliness during the election in Edo State,” he added.
The suspects are currently in custody and will be prosecuted in accordance with the law. The police also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
“We reassure the public of our dedication to protecting lives and property,” Adejobi said.
