Comrade Alhasan Yahaya has been elected as the new President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists during the union’s 8th National Triennial Delegate Conference, held at Sam Mbakwe Hall in Owerri, Imo State.
The Chairman of the NUJ Electoral Committee, Mr. Mike Iheagwu, announced the results of the highly anticipated election.
Yahaya secured a decisive victory with 436 votes, defeating Comrade Dele Atunbi, who garnered 97 votes, and Comrade Garba Mohammed, who received 39 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Comrade Yahaya expressed gratitude to journalists across the country for their support and pledged to prioritize the welfare of NUJ members.
He emphasized unity within the union, declaring that “there is no victor, no vanquished.”
Yahaya, a native of Gombe State, also highlighted his plans to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders and uphold professional standards in journalism.
As part of his first official act, the newly elected NUJ President conferred the title of Fellow of the NUJ National Council on the outgoing President, Dr. Chris Isiguzo, in recognition of his contributions to the union.
