A fire outbreak has caused extensive damage to the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria facilities in Ikoyi, Lagos.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the blaze, which erupted on Wednesday night, affected two buildings housing the control rooms, music, and radio studios.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed that the fire started from an air conditioning unit and spread to nearby structures.
“The fire affected three studios, roofs of the buildings suffered significant damages,” the statement noted. “Several offices in the storey buildings were also affected. Properties lost to the inferno were significant.”
Despite the extensive property damage, no casualties or injuries were reported. The fire was fully extinguished by 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday, thanks to a coordinated response from the LASEMA Response Team, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, and LASAMBUS officials.
“The LASEMA Response Team, alongside Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service and LASAMBUS officials were able to combat the fire to prevent any secondary incident,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated. “Valuable properties were salvaged during the recovery operation.”
In a separate incident on Tuesday, a fire broke out at Alayabiagba Market, located on Boundary Road in the Apapa-Ajegunle area of Lagos. The inferno destroyed 11 shops and properties worth millions of naira.
LASEMA attributed this fire to a gas leak originating from a gas retailer’s shop.
“Investigations conducted revealed that the explosion originated from a gas retailer’s shop where gas cylinders of various sizes were stored, as a result of gas leakage from one of the cylinders before spreading to other shops in the aforementioned location,” the agency’s statement explained.
