Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has voiced strong condemnation over recent extortion allegations against police officers in various parts of Nigeria, underscoring the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to addressing corruption and misconduct within its ranks.
Highlighting a specific incident in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Egbetokun referenced allegations involving four officers from the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters who reportedly extorted N10 million from several young citizens.
The officers identified as ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine are now detained and face an orderly room trial following the recovery of the funds, as confirmed by the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 16.
In a statement by the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP reaffirmed that “the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of IGP Egbetokun, maintains a zero-tolerance policy for any act of corruption and police misconduct. The Force takes every allegation of extortion and abuse of power extremely seriously.”
Adejobi further explained that the IGP has directed strict disciplinary measures for any officer found guilty of misconduct, reinforcing accountability within the police.
“In pursuit of restorative justice, the Inspector General of Police has mandated severe consequences for any officer, no matter how highly ranked, found culpable, acting as a deterrent to those who may seek to compromise the integrity of the Force,” Adejobi said.
He urged the public to report incidents of police misconduct through available helplines and contact points to ensure accountability.
In addition, Adejobi announced a forthcoming training program on child care and protection, set to begin Monday, aimed at enhancing officers’ skills in handling sensitive cases.
“The workshop will not only focus on enhancing technical capabilities but also emphasise the essential ethical principles when dealing with sensitive cases to establish a child-friendly police system in Nigeria,” he said.
He added, “By emphasising compassion, transparency, and adherence to modern investigative techniques, the Nigeria Police Force aims to foster a culture of professionalism and accountability among its personnel, thereby strengthening public trust and confidence in the organisation.”
