The Ogun State Police Command has announced deploying 7,777 officers across the state to ensure public safety during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
This was disclosed in a statement issued Tuesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola.
The State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, is leading the operation to address potential security challenges during the festive period.
According to the statement, the command has intensified its security measures, including increased checkpoints and patrols in strategic areas.
“We have recognised the heightened risk of criminal activities during this period and are taking proactive steps to safeguard lives and property,” Odutola stated.
Uniformed and plainclothes officers will be stationed across the state, particularly at critical locations such as religious centres, parks, recreation areas, government facilities, financial institutions, and the residences of diplomats. Enhanced security is also planned for high-risk areas, including the Long Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Rounder in Abeokuta, Sapaade, and Ogunmakin.
“Armoured patrols and specialised units like SWAT, Anti-Cultism, and Anti-Kidnapping will monitor these areas closely and conduct regular patrols near educational institutions,” Odutola added.
The command reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards criminal activities and warned individuals with unlawful intentions to reconsider. “Anyone planning to disrupt the festivities will face the full weight of the law,” the spokesperson emphasized.
To complement its efforts, the command urged drivers to exercise caution and patience at roadblocks set up for public safety. It also called on residents to cooperate with security personnel and adhere to the outlined protocols.
“We are working alongside other security agencies to implement a comprehensive strategy for peace and safety during the festive season. Adhering to these protocols will help ensure a secure environment for everyone,” Odutola noted.
Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo will personally oversee the operations and collaborate with Area Commanders to support officers in the field. “The Operations Department is fully prepared to respond decisively to any threats,” Odutola assured.
