With the holiday season fast approaching, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS has called on Nigerians to make their health a priority by getting tested to know their HIV status.
In a statement released on Sunday and signed by NACA’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Toyin Aderibigbe, the agency’s Director General, Dr. Temitope Ilori, emphasized the importance of health-conscious decisions during the festive period.
Describing Christmas as a season of joy and celebration, Dr. Ilori highlighted the need for responsible health choices.
“Knowing your status is a powerful step towards securing your health and protecting others,” she stated.
She encouraged Nigerians to utilize the free and confidential HIV testing services available nationwide.
Ilori further stressed that while HIV remains a critical public health issue, advancements in testing and treatment have made it manageable.
“Early diagnosis ensures access to lifesaving medication and a healthier, longer life,” she noted.
Recognizing the surge in social activities during the festive season, the NACA DG urged Nigerians to practice safety, including the use of protection during sexual activities, while reaffirming abstinence as the safest option for those who choose it.
“We understand that the festive season comes with increased social activities. While celebrating, let us remember the importance of safe practices,” she added.
She also pointed out that with the availability of widespread testing and education, ignorance is no longer an excuse for inaction.
“This festive season, give yourself the gift of health by visiting the nearest health facility or community testing centre to know your HIV status. Let us work together to create a healthier, happier Nigeria,” she urged.
NACA reiterated its commitment to reducing the spread of HIV and achieving an AIDS-free Nigeria, calling on everyone to take proactive steps to safeguard their health this holiday season.
