A Nigerian woman, Favour Igiebor, has been arrested by the Nigeria Immigration Service after a video showing her tearing up her husband’s passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos went viral.
The incident, captured on video, prompted the NIS to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the destruction of the Nigerian Standard Passport.
In the video, Igiebor is seen being escorted by NIS officers at the airport. The NIS confirmed that she has been summoned for questioning, describing her actions as a violation of Nigerian law.
In a statement, NIS spokesperson Kenneth Udo said, “The Nigeria Immigration Service has launched a formal investigation following the circulation of a video on social media showing a female traveller destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
The Nigeria Immigration Service remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security and to preserving the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal instruments.”
Igiebor, in a separate video response, explained her actions were a result of ongoing stress caused by her husband. “You have to ask what happened; don’t just look at the action alone. I am not a mad woman who would just come and act like that. I have my reasons; I have gone through many things,” she said.
In reaction to her statement, her husband, who chose to remain unnamed, mentioned that he preferred to resolve the matter privately. “My wife has posted something this morning. I don’t want to say anything, but I will leave you to watch the video… These are some things that we can resolve as a family,” he commented.
