Former Chelsea and Tottenham manager, Andre Villas-Boas, has been elected as the new president of Porto in a resounding victory.
The 46-year-old, who hasn’t managed a club since his stint at Marseille ended in 2021, secured a remarkable 80.3% of the vote, unseating the incumbent, Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, who had been at the helm for an impressive 42 years.
Celebrating his win outside his campaign headquarters, Villas-Boas was clad in Porto regalia, leading chants of support from his followers.
He expressed his gratitude and eagerness to meet the fans’ expectations, which he believes is centered on winning titles and securing the club’s future.
Villas-Boas, who will serve a four-year term, pledged to help restructure the club, aiming to return it to its former glory. He acknowledged the legacy of Pinto da Costa, recognizing his contributions in transforming Porto into a European powerhouse.
Despite concerns about security due to alleged intimidation, Villas-Boas is expected to attend Porto’s upcoming match against Sporting Lisbon.
This move signifies a new chapter for the club under his leadership, as they aim to regain their competitive edge.
As a manager, Villas-Boas achieved success with Porto, winning the Europa League and completing an unbeaten league campaign during the 2010-2011 season. His subsequent managerial stints at Chelsea, Tottenham, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Shanghai SIPG, and Marseille have been marked by varying degrees of success.
Beyond football, Villas-Boas has also ventured into rally car racing, competing in the Dakar Rally in 2018, showcasing his versatility and drive for new challenges.
