The United States has strongly condemned the killing of Cameroonian soldiers who were serving in the Multinational Joint Task Force in Nigeria’s Lake Chad Basin.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé denounced the attack, describing it as a “heinous” act of terrorism while offering condolences to the people of Cameroon.
“The United States Embassy in Youande condemns the heinous March 24 terrorist attack against Cameroonian soldiers serving in Nigeria in support of the Multinational Joint Taskforce in Lake Chad Basin,” the statement read.
Extending sympathies on behalf of the American people, the statement honoured the fallen soldiers, recognizing their role in safeguarding both Cameroon and the region.
“The dedication and sacrifice of these soldiers in the fight against terrorism stand as a powerful testament to their unwavering commitment to the safety and security of Cameroon and the region.
“They will not be forgotten, and their legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
“We stand with all Cameroonians as they mourn the loss of their fellow citizens,” the statement added.
The attack occurred on March 24, when Boko Haram insurgents launched an assault on a military base in Wolgo, Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State.
The deadly confrontation led to the deaths of several soldiers in an intense gun battle.
