The Kebbi State Police Command has reported the death of two officers during a confrontation with suspected members of the Lakurawa sect.
The officers lost their lives while attempting to thwart a cattle rustling operation in the state.
This was disclosed in a statement released on Saturday by the Command’s Spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar.
According to the statement, “On the 3rd January 2025, at about 0100hrs, armed hoodlums suspected to be Lakurawa bandits on motorcycles invaded Alhaji Lawal Block Farm and nearby Fulani settlements located at Natsini village, along Argungu/Kangiwa road and rustled unspecified number of cows.
“On receipt of the report, a team of Police Safer Highway patrol immediately rushed to the scene, engaged the bandits in a gun duel, pursued them, forcing the bandits to escape into the forest with gunshot wounds and successfully recovered some of the rustled cows.
“Regrettably, two police officers lost their lives during the encounter.”
Reacting to the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, denounced the attack and prayed for the deceased officers’ souls to find eternal peace.
The commissioner later visited the crime scene to assess the situation firsthand before meeting the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Mera, to extend his condolences and brief him on the joint security efforts underway to tackle crime in the region.
