Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have reportedly killed five labourers at a farm settlement in the Ajegunle-Powerline community, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The attack, which occurred around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, targeted workers on the farm. Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the area, shooting sporadically.
A local farmer, Akin Olowolafe, recounted the terrifying incident. “We were working on the farm when suddenly, the armed men arrived and started shooting. Five people were killed on the spot,” he said.
Olowolafe also claimed that the community had faced recurring attacks from herdsmen, who allegedly destroyed farmlands while grazing their cattle.
“We have reported their activities to the authorities, but no action has been taken,” he lamented.
Fidelis Daniel, a survivor of the attack, described how he narrowly escaped death.
“They came heavily armed and started shooting. Five of our colleagues were killed instantly. I was inside the farm when I heard the gunshots, and I ran for my life. It was only by God’s grace that I survived,” he said.
Daniel revealed that three of the deceased were from Plateau State, while two were from Kaduna State.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami, said investigations were underway to track down the perpetrators.
“There was an attack on the community, and the police are investigating the matter. However, I cannot confirm the exact number of casualties at this time,” she stated.
