Chelsea’s newest signing, Tosin Adarabioyo, has shed light on his decision to join the Blues on a free transfer, despite strong interest from Manchester United and Newcastle United.
Chelsea made it official on Friday morning, announcing the signing of Tosin Adarabioyo
Adarabioyo, who recently announced his departure from Fulham after a four-year stint, was initially linked with moves to both Manchester United and Newcastle United. However, Chelsea managed to convince the defender to choose them over the other clubs.
Speaking in his first interview with Chelsea, Adarabioyo expressed his excitement about joining the club, saying, “Growing up, Chelsea has always been a club that have performed well and one that have had great players and teams to watch. Chelsea have won big trophies and long may it continue. I’m here to win. I want to win. It’s as simple as that really. I just want to keep working and pushing the team and the club in the direction we want to go in. I’m excited to get going.”
Adarabioyo also reflected on his debut against Chelsea in 2016, jokingly stating, “If you can’t beat them, join them [laughs]! Chelsea have always had a best-in-class reputation, so I know what this club is all about. I came up against a full-strength Chelsea squad that day – it was amazing! A tough game but to make my debut against the likes of Diego Costa, Eden Hazard, Pedro and Willian was a great experience.”
The defender further explained his decision to choose Chelsea, citing his connections with former Chelsea players Raheem Sterling, Willy Caballero, and Cole Palmer.
He revealed that both Sterling and Palmer had spoken highly of the club and the project, which influenced his decision to join.
Adarabioyo’s signing became a priority for Chelsea following Thiago Silva’s departure from Stamford Bridge.
The 26-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Blues, becoming the first signing under new manager Enzo Maresca.
While Adarabioyo will fulfill his public relations obligations immediately, he will not join the team’s training sessions until they reconvene ahead of the new season.
