The Oyo State Government has directed all organizations and media outlets hosting end-of-year children’s funfairs and other public events to prioritize robust safety measures to protect attendees, especially children and the elderly.
This directive follows the tragic incident at Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan, where 35 people, mostly children, lost their lives in a stampede during a funfair event. Many others were injured.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government expressed its determination to prevent a recurrence of such a disaster.
“The tragic incident at Islamic High School, which claimed 35 lives, is a wake-up call for all of us,” Oyelade said. “As we celebrate the yuletide, we must also acknowledge the responsibilities that come with hosting such events.”
He emphasized that despite the mourning period, some media houses and organizations continue to promote end-of-year events. While the government recognizes the importance of giving children memorable experiences, it will not tolerate any negligence that could endanger lives.
“We encourage all event planners to prioritize the provision of adequate security personnel on-site, proper crowd control measures, and immediate access to medical assistance,” he stated.
The government has mandated event organizers to collaborate with relevant security agencies, medical personnel, and the Ministry of Health to implement strict safety protocols.
Prince Oyelade added, “We must learn from this experience and take necessary steps to ensure that our children can enjoy these programmes in a safe and secure environment.”
The government also urged the public to show solidarity with the families affected by the recent tragedy as the state continues to recover from the loss.
