Controversial Nigerian rapper Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has been granted bail after spending nearly a month in police custody.
The announcement was made by his legal counsel, Stanley Alieke, via an Instagram post on Monday.
“Apki has been granted bail by the court,” Alieke wrote, providing minimal details about the proceedings.
Speed Darlington was taken into custody on November 27 during a performance in Owerri, Imo State.
His arrest was reportedly linked to allegations of verbal attacks on Grammy-winning artist Damini Ogulu, widely known as Burna Boy.
The rapper’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, also accused Burna Boy of instigating the arrest. According to Adeyanju, Speed Darlington’s criticisms of Burna Boy’s association with embattled U.S. rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs—who faces allegations of sexual exploitation and human trafficking—sparked the initial conflict.
“Speed Darlington vowed to keep speaking out against Burna Boy because of his ties with Diddy,” Adeyanju explained.
Earlier, Adeyanju had confirmed the filing of a Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure application, pushing for either Speed Darlington’s arraignment or release.
“Our FREP application for Speed Darlington has been granted by the court,” Adeyanju stated. “He is to be arraigned within 48 hours or released. Justice may take time, but it will always prevail.”
