Mateo Retegui’s double inspired Atalanta to a 2-1 comeback victory at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, overturning an early deficit to deny Como a historic first top-flight season double since the 1949/50 campaign.
This result also served as payback for Atalanta’s surprising September defeat in the reverse fixture.
Eager to secure consecutive wins for only the second time this season, Como nearly made a dream start, threatening after just four minutes.
Nico Paz connected with Alieu Fadera’s cross, directing a header goalward, but Marco Carnesecchi reacted sharply to deny him.
Moments later, Yannik Engelhardt’s glancing header also tested Carnesecchi, who pulled off another impressive save to keep the game level.
However, Como’s persistence was rewarded just past the half-hour mark. A slick exchange between Fadera and Paz culminated in the latter unleashing a stunning first-time strike from the edge of the box, finding the top-left corner for his fifth goal of the campaign.
Cesc Fabregas’ men dominated proceedings as the first half wore on, but they were unable to convert their control into further opportunities to trouble Carnesecchi.
After a subdued first half, Atalanta came alive after the break, almost leveling just two minutes into the second half.
Giorgio Scalvini connected with a Juan Cuadrado cross, but his header was parried away from the top-right corner by the Como goalkeeper.
The visitors eventually found their equalizer in the 59th minute through their in-form talisman, Retegui.
Marco Brescianini’s delivery was expertly met by the striker, who volleyed it into the bottom-right corner for his 15th league goal of the campaign.
Retegui was far from finished, completing the turnaround with a clinical strike 20 minutes from time. Combining once again with Brescianini, the forward demonstrated superb composure to control the ball inside the box before slotting it into the bottom-right corner.
Atalanta held firm in the closing stages, sealing a vital three points to end their four-game winless run in Serie A (D3, L1).
Meanwhile, Como remain perilously close to the relegation zone, sitting just three points clear of the bottom three ahead of the weekend’s remaining fixtures.
