Alvaro Morata ended his goal drought with a crucial strike, while Tijjani Reijnders netted twice to secure a comfortable 3-0 victory for AC Milan in a fog-shrouded contest at the San Siro.
The win lifts Milan to seventh place with 22 points, trailing Juventus by three. Juventus, currently holding the Conference League spot, are set to face a struggling Lecce side on Sunday. Paulo Fonseca’s team, with a game in hand, remains six points adrift of the top four and seven behind league leaders Napoli, who head to Torino on Sunday afternoon.
Despite the gap, Reijnders remains optimistic about Milan’s title ambitions, especially with a crucial fixture against high-flying Atalanta looming next weekend.
“Of course we’re thinking about it, because we want to fight for titles and the position where we are now is not what we want,” Reijnders told DAZN.
Empoli, boasting the league’s fourth-best defense before kickoff, remain in 10th place after yet another goalless outing against Milan at the San Siro—their fifth in a row.
The 68,000 fans in attendance endured chilly weather and dense fog that obscured the field, particularly in the first half. Their mood, however, was lifted after Morata smashed home his fourth goal of the season in the 19th minute. Reijnders added to the tally with a stunning first-time shot just before the break and sealed the win with a solo effort in the second half, bringing his season total to six goals.
“We were very good both going forward and in defence… We won 3-0 but we had enough chances to win the game by six or seven,” said Fonseca, reflecting on the performance.
Elsewhere, Como and Monza remain stuck in the relegation zone after a 1-1 draw, while Bologna prepare to take on bottom-placed Venezia later in the day.
