Security forces successfully repelled an early-morning attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on the Malari Police Station in Borno State.
The attempted assault, which occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, was thwarted by a joint effort of police officers and soldiers.
Spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers were met with strong resistance and forced to retreat.
“Yes, there was an attack on Malari Police Station, but no casualties were recorded. The officers on duty, working alongside the military, prevented the insurgents from gaining entry into the town,” Daso said.
During the attack, the assailants targeted a police Armoured Personnel Carrier, damaging its tyres but failing to destroy the vehicle.
“So far, no bodies have been recovered, but we are confident that the insurgents suffered casualties,” he added.
Residents of Malari, however, remain on edge, fearing a potential resurgence of the attackers.
“We are scared they may return. We appreciate the efforts of our security forces and urge them to strengthen security measures,” a local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters.
The attack follows a similar incident weeks ago when Boko Haram militants stormed the Nganzai Police Division in Borno, killing two officers.
Borno State Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Lawal, praised the security personnel for their resilience in defending Malari and reassured the public of continued efforts to maintain peace.
“Our officers demonstrated exceptional bravery in preventing what could have been a devastating attack. We remain committed to ensuring the safety of residents,” Lawal stated.
