The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (retd.), has called on the contractor handling the state House of Assembly Complex reconstruction to accelerate work and meet the agreed deadline.
According to The PUNCH, during an inspection of the ongoing project along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Ibas stressed that his administration was committed to restoring legislative activities in the state.
“One of the pillars missing in the state governance structure right now is the legislature. For them to function effectively, they need a place to work from,” he stated.
The reconstruction project, awarded to Monier Construction Company Limited, includes a two-storey building with 34 en-suite offices, an elevator, a gallery, meeting rooms, and a conference hall.
Accompanied by the Head of Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, Ibas was conducted around the site by MCC’s General Manager, Omaka Oko.
Expressing concerns about the pace of the work, he noted, “I am yet to be sure that work is progressing as expected, so that by the end of the six months, this place will be ready for use.”
He further emphasized that the state government had fulfilled its financial obligations to the contractor, urging them to meet their commitment.
“They have a schedule and timelines to follow. From my briefing, the state has done its part by providing the necessary funds. Now, it is up to them to ensure they deliver as agreed,” he added.
Ibas reaffirmed his primary mandate of maintaining law and order in Rivers State, ensuring that governance operates smoothly. “I was appointed to restore order, and part of that is ensuring the legislative arm has a functional space to carry out its duties,” he stated.
