Real Madrid head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, has refuted recent speculation regarding Luka Modric’s ability to play back-to-back matches, emphasizing that the veteran midfielder remains in excellent shape.
Los Blancos are set to face Real Betis on March 1 at the Benito Villamarín Stadium, following their 2-0 victory over Girona on February 23, where Modric opened the scoring at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The Croatian playmaker, however, was left on the bench during Madrid’s Copa del Rey semifinal against Real Sociedad on February 26, fueling reports that he is no longer fit enough to start consecutive games.
Addressing these claims ahead of the LaLiga fixture, Ancelotti firmly dismissed any concerns about Modric’s endurance. Speaking to the press, he stated (via @FabrizioRomano on X, “It’s NOT true that Luka Modrić can’t play 2 games in a row as he’s 39. Luka can play 2 games in a row without any problem. He’s fine, well trained, very good physically. The data we have show he is very well prepared to play.”
The Italian tactician had previously heaped praise on Modric following the win against Girona, highlighting his dedication and lasting impact on the game (via Managing Madrid):
“Modric is a gift to football. He should continue as long as he wants. He does what he does very well. We have been lucky to have a legend with us. Football is a gift for his seriousness, quality and professionalism.”
Despite being 39, Modric continues to play a key role for Real Madrid, having featured in 39 matches this season while contributing four goals and six assists.
