The Federal Capital Territory Police Command on Thursday reported that a police container compartment at the Nyanya checkpoint was set on fire by hoodlums.
Contrary to viral reports suggesting the Nyanya Divisional Police Headquarters had been torched, the command clarified that the headquarters remained intact.
The police also disclosed an attempted vandalism of the Tipper Garage Police post in Nyanya, leading to the arrest of four suspects.
The command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, identified the suspects as Mathias Jude, 29, Mohammad Ahmed, 23, Abba Jibril, 18, and Mohammad Haruna, 18.
Adeh emphasized that the FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, condemned the destruction of public and police property during protests.
Igweh warned that those caught vandalizing such property would face legal consequences.
He acknowledged the right of residents to protest but stressed that violent behavior and destruction of infrastructure would not be tolerated.
“The commissioner of police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, while acknowledging the right of residents to protest, frowns at the destruction of public or police infrastructure.
Any violent protester arrested for destroying public property will be made to face the wrath of the law,” Adeh stated.
