The Borno State Police Command has recovered eight unexploded ordnance in Maiduguri, reassuring residents of their safety.
The explosives, discovered in two separate incidents on November 22, 2024, were linked to the recent flooding in the state.
In the first incident, police received a distress call at approximately 8:43 a.m. about suspicious objects near an unoccupied building in Dala-Abuja Talakawa area.
Explosives experts from the Command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Base 13 promptly responded. They recovered six projectiles and a mortar bomb, safely relocating them.
Later that day, around 1:00 p.m., another distress call reported an unidentified object washed ashore along the Gwange riverbank. The police EOD team identified and recovered a hand grenade.
Preliminary investigations suggest the ordnance were carried to the locations by recent floodwaters.
Speaking on the incident, Commissioner of Police Mohammed Lawal Yusufu emphasized the Command’s dedication to public safety.
“We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of everyone in the state,” he said. “We urge residents to remain calm, vigilant, and report any suspicious items or activities immediately.”
The Command provided emergency contacts for reporting such incidents: 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293.
ASP Grace Michael, the Command’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, reiterated the importance of public cooperation. “The swift response of our EOD team underscores our preparedness to address any threat to public safety,” she stated.
