The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has neutralized two armed robbers and arrested four others following a series of operations targeting crime in the Jahi area of Abuja.
Thirteen stolen vehicles were also recovered, with police attributing the success to their specialized Scorpion Squad.
The Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, explained that on October 21, police officers responded to a distress call reporting a robbery in Jahi.
Upon arrival, the robbers reportedly opened fire, resulting in a shootout that left two suspects dead. Disu stated, “As soon as our patrol team arrived, the suspects began shooting, prompting a confrontation where two suspects were neutralized.”
Two other suspects Haruna Abdullahi, 32, and Yerima Usman, 28 were detained at the scene, both allegedly linked to previous robberies in areas including Mabushi, Jahi, and Gishiri.
Disu added that a follow-up operation led to the capture of two more individuals connected to the gang, Abba Ismail, also known as Dan-Abba, and Ashiru Suleiman. “During interrogation, these suspects admitted to working under a gang leader identified as Dan Auwalu, who is currently on the run,” said Disu.
In a separate investigation, the police apprehended five suspects allegedly involved in car theft. Disu identified some of these suspects as Arji Thomas, 32, from Borno State, Amobi Ndukwe, 40, from Enugu State, and Amaechi Sampson, 26, from Imo State.
According to Disu, these individuals belong to a car-snatching syndicate led by a man known as Chidiebere, who remains at large. “Thomas and Ndukwe are ex-convicts who have reportedly been operating in Garki for over a year, with numerous car thefts attributed to them,” he noted.
The commissioner also provided details of another arrest in connection to car theft involving a suspect named Joseph Abang.
According to Disu, Abang was tracked to Jos, Plateau State, where he confessed to being part of a gang that stole and resold vehicles across Abuja, Plateau, and Nasarawa. “During a search at his home, police recovered additional vehicles a Hyundai Accent and a Peugeot 208 believed to be stolen,” Disu revealed.
Another vehicle, a Toyota Hilux with registration number 03A309 FG, stolen by a newly employed security guard identified as Usman Abubakar, was also retrieved.
“Abubakar had only been employed for three days when he took the vehicle to Nasarawa State,” Disu stated, noting that efforts are underway to apprehend Abubakar, who is still at large.
The FCT Police Command continues its investigation and plans to charge all suspects to court once further evidence is gathered.
