Security operatives on Wednesday morning fired tear gas canisters to disperse supporters of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who had gathered at the National Assembly gate to protest.
According to The Cable, the group had arrived at the legislative complex around 8 a.m., just as plenary was set to resume.
However, police officers quickly intervened, using tear gas to prevent them from accessing the premises. Following the dispersal, the protesters relocated to the Unity Fountain, a popular venue for demonstrations in Abuja.
The demonstration comes amid an ongoing dispute between Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The conflict began on February 20 over seating arrangements in the Senate chamber, leading to her referral to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions.
In response, Akpoti-Uduaghan filed a N100 billion defamation lawsuit against Akpabio. Last Friday, she alleged that the Senate President was targeting her for disciplinary action because she rejected his alleged sexual advances.
She is expected to appear before the Senate ethics committee at 2 p.m. today.
