The Edo State Police Command has taken two suspected cultists into custody for allegedly attempting to kill a rival cult member, Egiegbor Lucky, aged 29, in the Irrua community of Esan Central Local Government Area, Edo State.
The suspects, identified as Aigbomian Daniel, 20, and Innocent Okiomisi, 32, are believed to be members of the Eiye Confraternity.
They reportedly tracked and shot the victim on January 14 with the intent to end his life.
Speaking on the incident, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the arrests on Thursday.
He stated that the suspects are being held in police custody and admitted to their involvement in a secret cult during interrogation.
“I can confirm to you that the suspected cultists were arrested and are in police custody. During interrogation, they confessed to being members of cult groups. One locally made pistol and one live cartridge were recovered from the suspects, and they will be charged to court soon,” Yamu revealed.
According to a police source, the suspects trailed Lucky, who is also allegedly linked to a rival cult, and shot him in the right arm.
Although injured, the victim managed to escape and report the attack at the Irrua Police Station.
The source further explained that the attack was fueled by ongoing clashes between rival cult groups in the area. After the shooting, the suspects fled, believing their target is dead.
The police spokespsrson reassured the public of the Command’s commitment to curbing cult-related violence in the state, emphasizing that justice will be served for the victim.
