The Ogun State Police Command has announced the arrest of a street urchin, Abdullahi Sodiq, for allegedly stealing valuables from unsuspecting individuals, particularly women, in Sagamu.
The arrest, made by officers of the Sakura Police Division, followed a directive from the State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, aimed at cracking down on criminal activities in the area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the development in a statement released on Friday.
According to the statement, Sodiq was apprehended on Thursday evening while patrolling the Sakura area. He was reportedly found in possession of a black nylon bag containing an iPhone 12 Pro Max, travel documents, a house key, and other items.
“When questioned, Abdullahi Sodiq could not provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the items in his possession,” Odutola revealed.
Further investigation identified the rightful owner of the items as Iyabo Ogunubi, who reported the theft to the police.
The statement added: “On January 16, 2025, at about 7:30 pm, the Sakura Divisional Police Officer and his team intercepted Abdullahi Sodiq, who had no fixed address. He was found carrying a black handbag that belonged to a woman.
“Items inside the bag included an iPhone 12 Pro Max, travel documents, and a house key. Upon questioning, he failed to explain how the bag came into his possession. A follow-up investigation confirmed the bag belonged to Ms Ogunubi.”
The police disclosed that the suspect would be charged in court. They also urged residents to take measures to safeguard their belongings.
“This arrest reflects the ongoing efforts of the police to rid the state of criminal elements. We encourage the public to remain vigilant and prioritize the security of their valuables,” Odutola stated.
