The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old Islamic teacher for allegedly murdering Yetunde Lawal, a final-year student of the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin.
Lawal, who reportedly met the suspect on Facebook, was invited to meet him last Monday. However, she was later found dead and dismembered at a location in Ganmo, on the outskirts of Ilorin.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kwara, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, stated that investigations into the case were ongoing.
“The Kwara Police Command is aware of the gruesome killing of one Miss Yetunde H. Lawal,” Ejire-Adeyemi said. “On February 11, 2025, at about 1800 hours, her father, Mr. Ibrahim A. Lawal, reported her missing at the C Division, Oja-Oba.”
Following the report, police detectives tracked the deceased’s phone, which led them to the suspect’s residence in the Offa Garaji area of Ilorin. Initially, he denied knowledge of her whereabouts.
However, during a search of his home, officers uncovered evidence suggesting foul play. “The suspect later confessed that she had visited him but claimed she died of an asthma attack,” the PPRO explained.
Further investigations led to the shocking discovery of Lawal’s dismembered remains hidden inside a bowl, along with tools allegedly used in the crime.
Ejire-Adeyemi assured that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further scrutiny. “We will ensure that justice is served,” she added.
