The tragic death of Adetunji Opayele, popularly known as Teejay, has sparked widespread outrage in Nigeria, with thousands calling for justice.
The 31-year-old tech entrepreneur and co-founder of Bumpa lost his life following an accident on March 4, 2025, along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Opayele was riding his power bike home from the gym when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Biola Adams-Odutayo.
Reports indicated that Adams-Odutayo, a healthcare professional, failed to yield while merging onto the expressway, colliding with Opayele and leaving him critically injured on the road.
However, what has fueled public anger is the allegation that Adams-Odutayo refused to assist the injured entrepreneur, reportedly stating that she didn’t want blood to stain her car.
Bystanders, desperate to save Opayele, rushed him to multiple hospitals, but he was allegedly turned away before finally being admitted to a facility where he succumbed to his injuries just after midnight.
The incident has triggered a wave of activism, with over 35,000 Nigerians signing a petition on Change.org, demanding stronger charges against Adams-Odutayo.
While she was arrested and charged with reckless driving, many believe this is insufficient and are calling for manslaughter charges.
The petitioners have also urged the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure proper prosecution.
On social media, Nigerians have voiced their outrage, an X user @iamrenike expressed grief, writing, “Biola Adams-Odutayo took my friend from me. She hit him with her car and refused to take him to the hospital because she didn’t want blood to stain her car seats. Now she’s trying to escape justice. Please sign this petition.”
Another user, @DavidLawani, criticized Adams-Odutayo’s actions, stating, “It’s shocking that she’s also in the health sector and could have helped if she wanted to.”
Highlighting the devastating impact of negligence, @Wohswobi wrote, “A brilliant life was stolen by negligence. Adetunji Opayele (Teejay), the co-founder of Bumpa, was left to die. Kindly sign and share this petition to demand justice.”
Many have also condemned the lack of empathy displayed by Adams-Odutayo. @SeyiOwolabi9 noted, “Teejay was coming from a gym, not a club. Yet, someone drove recklessly and killed him, refusing to help. No empathy, even as a health professional.”
Frustration over the state of emergency healthcare in Nigeria was another focal point of the conversation.
Users criticized hospitals that reportedly refused to treat Opayele due to procedural restrictions. @iamtherealOG questioned, “What exactly is the rationale behind hospitals rejecting patients that need urgent medical attention? This has cost a lot of lives!”
Echoing similar sentiments, @AdoraNwodo called for systemic change, stating, “As we talk about Biola Adams-Odutayo being reckless and wicked, let’s also talk about the foolishness of Nigerian hospitals. Accident victims are turned away because of police reports. Shouldn’t you save the life first?”
The demand for justice continues to grow, with many insisting that Opayele’s tragic death must not be in vain.
Nigerians are calling for stricter enforcement of road safety laws, immediate medical attention for accident victims, and harsher penalties for reckless driving, rspecially when it results in loss of life.
