Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Kano State have apprehended two individuals for allegedly impersonating civil defence personnel and extorting money from government officials.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Abdullahi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.
He identified the suspects as 43-year-old Muhammad Sarari from Goron Dutse, Dala Local Government Area, and 32-year-old Madaki Zaharaddeen from Hotoro Quarters, Nassarawa Local Government Area.
According to Abdullahi, the duo falsely presented themselves as NSCDC officers, visiting various government ministries and agencies in Kano to intimidate high-ranking officials and demand money.
“The suspects were impersonating by parading themselves as civil defence staff. They used to storm some ministries and agencies of government in Kano, intimidating top government officials and extorting money from them,” he stated.
Their fraudulent activities came to an end when they entered a well-known television station in the state, where they allegedly threatened a senior management staff member for financial gain.
“They were, thereafter, caught by personnel of the Corps, Tarauni Divisional Office, and brought to the state headquarters for interrogation,” Abdullahi added.
During the investigation, both suspects reportedly admitted to the crime. One of them was found in possession of a fake NSCDC identity card and an inner garment bearing the agency’s logo.
“Upon investigation, the duo confessed to the crime, and one of the suspects was found in possession with fake identity card of the NSCDC and an inner wear bearing the service logo of the Corps,” he said.
With the investigation concluded, the suspects are set to face charges for impersonating a public servant, conspiracy, intimidation, and extortion.
