The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has refuted allegations that it distributes substandard petrol that burns too quickly.
In a statement released on Saturday by its spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, the company addressed a viral video in which a content creator compared petrol purchased from different stations and claimed that fuel from NNPCL stations had a shorter usage time.
The viral clip, which gained traction online, featured an individual claiming to have bought a litre of petrol from an MRS filling station in Alapere, Lagos, at ₦925 and another litre from an NNPC station in Ojodu Berger for ₦945.
The individual then reportedly tested both fuels in separate power generators, observing that the generator using NNPC petrol stopped after 17 minutes, while the one using Dangote petrol ran for 33 minutes.
Reacting to the claim, NNPCL stated that the petrol sold at its station was sourced from the Dangote refinery.
“The NNPC Ltd strongly refutes the false and misleading allegations made in a viral video circulating online, which claims that NNPC fuel does not last.
“This assertion is baseless and entirely unfounded, originating from unverified and amateur research that lacks credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight,” the company asserted.
NNPCL reaffirmed that its fuel is “carefully formulated with one of the best compositions, ensuring optimal efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability for consumers.”
The company further clarified that a substantial portion of Premium Motor Spirit sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos comes from the Dangote refinery.
“It is important to emphasise that a significant percentage of Premium Motor Spirit sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos—where this deceptive video was created—is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in promoting local production and energy security.
“Dangote Refinery adheres to strict industry standards, guaranteeing the quality of petroleum products supplied to our consumers,” the statement read.
NNPCL dismissed the video as a deliberate attempt by economic saboteurs to mislead Nigerians and tarnish its image.
“We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation designed to undermine our operations and mislead Nigerians.
“Henceforth, NNPC Ltd will take firm legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods about our brand and operations. Those engaged in such malicious activities will be held fully accountable under the law,” it warned.
Urging Nigerians to disregard the video, NNPCL called on the public to seek accurate information from credible sources, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring fuel availability, affordability, and quality while maintaining international standards.
