A 16-year-old Nigerian, Manasseh Aluga, has gained international acclaim for his innovative approach to tackling plastic waste by converting it into eco-friendly building materials.
According to The PUNCH, based in Jos, Plateau State, Aluga was honoured with the second-place award in the prestigious International Young Eco-Hero competition, organized by the U.S.-based environmental organization, Action For Nature.
Aluga’s initiative, known as the Kundu Waste Management Project, stood out for its groundbreaking solution to the plastic pollution problem plaguing his community.
This project, which began in March 2022, focuses on repurposing plastic waste into durable eco-bricks, which are then utilized in local construction efforts.
In a statement released on Monday, AFN spokesperson Kelly Carnes highlighted the significance of Aluga’s work.
“We are impressed by Manasseh’s determination to create a cleaner environment, despite facing financial constraints and personal challenges,” Carnes remarked, emphasizing the impact of his efforts on both his local community and the broader environmental movement.
The Kundu project has already made notable progress, with its eco-bricks being successfully produced and distributed to various construction sites.
This initiative not only addresses the pressing issue of plastic waste but also provides a sustainable building alternative that benefits the local construction industry.
Aluga’s recognition as a leading environmental innovator in Nigeria underscores the global importance of grassroots efforts in the fight against pollution, inspiring others to take similar actions in their own communities.
