France’s captain and star striker, Kylian Mbappe, who sustained a suspected broken nose during their 1-0 victory over Austria in a Group D match of the 2024 Euros may continue to play with a protective mask.
France’s head coach, Didier Deschamps, voiced his concern for Mbappe, emphasizing the impact of the injury on their team’s dynamics.
The incident has raised questions about the forward’s ability to participate in the upcoming matches, though the protective gear offers a glimmer of hope for his continued presence on the field.
Mbappe collided with Kevin Danso’s shoulder after heading the ball, resulting in a bloody injury and his substitution from the match.
Mbappe was eventually replaced by Olivier Giroud, with French boss Didier Deschamps revealing after the game that he had broken his nose.
Mbappe was subsequently transported to a local hospital via ambulance, where assessments revealed that he does not require surgery.
However, he will undergo dedicated treatment in the coming days, and a protective facemask will be designed for his return to action.
Deschamps stated, “He’s not doing well. His nose got badly hit… It seems quite complicated, which is really very unfortunate for us.”
The French Football Federation confirmed Mbappe’s fractured nose but stated he would not require immediate surgery.
Mbappe will undergo treatment and wear a protective facemask upon his return.
His availability for Friday’s match against the Netherlands remains uncertain.
Mbappe tweeted, “Any ideas for masks?” indicating his intention to continue playing in the Euros.
N’Golo Kante expressed concern, saying, “We’re worried to see Kylian leave the field like that.”
Deschamps acknowledged the uncertainty, stating, “I cannot at this stage give the answer (if he will be ruled out).”
However, he emphasized Mbappe’s importance, saying, “The French team with Kylian would always be stronger.”
