A yet-to-be-identified man has been electrocuted while allegedly attempting to steal electrical wires from a transformer in the Akute area of Ogun State.
The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday.
She explained that the individual climbed into the transformer enclosure to cut a wire but was electrocuted in the process, leading to his death.
The chairman of the Irewole community, Rasheed Ajagbe, reported the matter to the police, revealing that the community had been dealing with recurring theft and damage to their power infrastructure.
“At about 10:20 a.m. on Friday, Mr. Ajagbe informed the station that their transformer had been the target of thieves for some time,” Odutola said.
“He shared that he received a call earlier in the morning asking him to inspect the transformer. Upon arrival with other community leaders, they discovered a lifeless body inside the transformer house. It appeared the deceased had been electrocuted while attempting to vandalize the wires.”
Following the report, detectives visited the scene to conduct an investigation and take photographs. Officials from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria were also contacted, and the body was moved to the Ifo General Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
Odutola reiterated the importance of vigilance in preventing similar incidents, stating, “Communities must remain proactive in safeguarding critical infrastructure, and residents should immediately report suspicious activities to the authorities.”
