Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the second phase of the Adiyan Water Works project is 80 percent complete and will provide 70 million gallons of potable water daily upon completion.
According to The PUNCH, Sanwo-Olu speaking during an inspection visit to the facility in Ogun State on Wednesday expressed confidence in the project’s progress, noting that significant work had been done.
“Adiyan II is designed to produce 70 million gallons per day, and from today’s inspection, we can see that it is about 80 per cent completed,” the governor said. “The electromagnetic and electromechanical components, including the pumps, are on site, and installation will soon begin.”
Sanwo-Olu further revealed that about 70 to 75 percent of the required equipment, particularly for the raw water intake system, has already been delivered, with pipelines being laid from Akute to the Ogun River.
“The contractor is working on all three components of the project and has assured us that in another 10 to 12 months, this place will be completely transformed,” he added.
The governor commended both the project contractor and the local community for their cooperation, emphasizing that their support has been crucial in advancing the waterworks.
“The local community is as pleased as we are, as evident from the warm reception we received,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “Compensation has already been paid by both the Lagos and Ogun state governments.”
Despite the progress, he acknowledged that more work remains, particularly in expanding water transmission and capacity building.
“The job is not finished yet; we still have a lot to do in terms of transmission and capacity building,” he said. “This is another promise fulfilled, though delayed. It will be a project Lagosians will be proud of, one that will enhance both the economy and quality of life in the state.”
Reiterating the government’s commitment to providing clean water, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of the project for Lagos, a megacity with a growing population.
“Water is a critical resource that the government must provide, and we are pleased that Adiyan II will fulfill this responsibility,” he said.
He also disclosed plans to extend pipelines across the Lagos Lagoon to supply water to key areas such as Ikoyi and Lekki.
The completion of the Adiyan Water Works Phase II is expected to significantly improve access to clean water for residents, contributing to better public health and economic development in the state.
