Lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly have strongly criticized the invasion of the legislative complex by operatives of the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police, describing the incident as an assault on democracy and a national disgrace.
According to The PUNCH, during a plenary session attended by 36 legislators, the assembly demanded an explanation from the Lagos State DSS Director regarding the presence of security personnel at the complex.
They also called on the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to investigate the matter and provide the public with a detailed report on the findings.
The lawmakers urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene to prevent further escalation, stressing that the incident posed a serious threat to democratic governance in the state.
“This is not a government ruled by the barrel of a gun. This is an aberration of democracy and a step toward anarchy,” said Abiodun Tobun, a member of the assembly.
He further reaffirmed the lawmakers’ loyalty to the Speaker of the House, stating, “Nobody can dictate to us. God chooses and removes leaders. We are solidly behind your leadership, Mr. Speaker—nobody can remove you.”
Another legislator, Gbolahan Yishawu, condemned the invasion, calling it an overreach by security agencies.
“The Nigerian Constitution clearly spells out the separation of powers. The legislature is a key pillar of democracy, and any attempt to intimidate or disrupt its activities must be condemned in the strongest terms,” Yishawu stated.
The assembly members suggested that powerful individuals or groups might be behind the incident, calling for a thorough investigation to uncover those responsible.
