The Lagos State Government has appealed to labour unions representing workers in its broadcasting agencies to reconsider their planned industrial action scheduled for Monday, January 13, 2025.
The unions are pushing for the integration of their members into the mainstream civil service.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, disclosed that the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the Radio, Television, Theatre, and Arts Workers’ Union of Nigeria are spearheading the strike to demand better employment conditions for their members.
“The proposed strike aims to advocate for the inclusion of union members into the mainstream civil service of Lagos State,” Ayantayo said.
The Commissioner highlighted that the state government has already initiated efforts to address the unions’ grievances.
He noted that discussions were held on January 8, 2025, between government representatives and union leaders, where a resolution was made to escalate the unions’ demands to the Lagos State Executive Council.
“During a meeting with the unions on January 8, the government acknowledged their concerns and resolved to present their requests to the State Executive Council for consideration,” Ayantayo stated.
However, he cautioned the unions against proceeding with the strike, emphasizing that civil service entry follows established procedures.
“For clarity, joining the Lagos State Civil Service is subject to specific policies and processes. We urge union members to embrace dialogue and an amicable resolution instead of industrial action,” Ayantayo concluded.
