Luka Modric’s stunning first-half volley and a late finish from Vinicius Jr secured a 2-0 victory for Real Madrid over Girona at home on Sunday, ending their three-game winless streak and propelling the reigning champions to second place in LaLiga, just behind Barcelona.
Real Madrid took time to find their rhythm but gradually seized control of the contest. As halftime approached, a clearance from a corner landed perfectly for Modric, who unleashed a sensational long-range volley that soared into the top corner in the 41st minute.
The home side’s attacking force kept Girona’s defense under pressure throughout, eventually doubling their lead in the 83rd minute.
Kylian Mbappe threaded a pass through to Vinicius Jr, who calmly slotted the ball under Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.
With this result, Real Madrid climbed to 54 points after 25 matches, drawing level with Barcelona, who had secured a 2-0 away win over Las Palmas a day earlier but held the advantage on head-to-head record.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid, following a 3-0 triumph at Valencia on Saturday, remained in contention with 53 points.
