Girona and Celta Vigo played out a gripping 2-2 draw at the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi, their second deadlock of the season.
The result leaves both teams side by side in the LaLiga standings, with Girona in 10th and Celta just behind in 11th.
Celta aimed to extend their unbeaten run to four top-flight matches for the first time since December 2023, but that goal appeared in jeopardy midway through a balanced first half.
Girona came close to opening the scoring when Oriol Romeu’s thunderous long-range strike crashed off the left post.
However, moments later, Yangel Herrera rose highest to nod a precise cross into Viktor Tsygankov’s path, allowing the Ukrainian to convert from close range and give the hosts the lead.
The visitors responded swiftly, refusing to be fazed by Girona’s early advantage. Sergio Carreira picked out Iker Losada in space, and the young midfielder made no mistake, calmly finishing from point-blank range to level the contest before halftime.
Celta wasted no time seizing control after the interval. Just minutes into the second half, David Lopez brought down Alfon Gonzalez inside the area, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the spot.
Marcos Alonso stepped up and dispatched his penalty with composure, finding the bottom-left corner to complete the turnaround for the Sky Blues.
Girona were undeterred and hit back almost immediately. Tsygankov turned provider, delivering a pinpoint corner that Herrera expertly guided into the left corner, restoring parity and setting up a thrilling final 20 minutes.
Both sides pushed for a winner as the match neared its conclusion, with Cristhian Stuani and Gonzalez each going close but failing to capitalize on their chances.
Despite halting a run of three consecutive defeats—something they last endured in 2019, Michel’s Girona will feel disappointed at having surrendered their early lead.
Meanwhile, Celta miss the opportunity to close the gap on the top six, as they continue their push for a European qualification spot for the first time since the 2015/16 campaign.
