The Kano State government has strongly condemned the recent mob attack that led to the killing of travellers accused of kidnapping in Edo State.
The PUNCH reported that in a statement released by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, on Saturday, the government denounced the tragic event as a “heinous act” and called for swift action from security agencies and the judiciary.
Similarly, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, also expressed outrage over the incident, emphasizing the need for justice.
Waiya, addressing the disturbing rise in extrajudicial killings in Nigeria, stated, “All individuals found to be complicit in this atrocity must be brought to justice, including any law enforcement personnel who may have neglected their duty.”
He further stressed Nigeria’s obligations under international law to protect citizens and ensure that violence and torture do not go unpunished.
“Nigerian authorities are reminded of their unequivocal obligation under international law to protect the rights and lives of all citizens, ensuring that no act of violence or torture goes unpunished,” the statement read.
The Kano government urged President Bola Tinubu and Governor Okpebholo to take a firm stand against the attack and guarantee justice for the victims.
“We urge President Bola Tinubu and Governor Monday Okpebholo to denounce this act unequivocally and to demonstrate a steadfast commitment to justice by ensuring that the perpetrators are swiftly prosecuted through a fair and impartial trial.”
Waiya also noted that the incident in Uromi is part of a concerning rise in vigilante violence nationwide. He called for both punitive and preventive measures to curb the growing trend.
“The Uromi tragedy, sadly, is not an isolated event but part of a broader and alarming trend of vigilante violence across the nation. This culture of impunity can only be countered by decisive action—both punitive and preventive—to reestablish the rule of law,” he advised.
Reaffirming the need for human rights protection, the Kano government emphasized the importance of proactive steps to prevent future occurrences of such acts.
