The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kaduna State University chapter, has called off its strike, which began on February 18.
In a statement released on Monday, ASUU KASU Chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, confirmed that the decision to end the strike was reached on Saturday.
He explained that the state government took immediate steps to address the union’s concerns, including the release of funds to settle 60 percent of withheld salaries from September 2017 and unpaid allowances for the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme spanning five sessions.
“The government also agreed to a timeline for the payment of the five months’ withheld salaries from May to September 2022, as well as promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowance, pension remittances from 2009 to 2019, death benefits, and Group Life Assurance,” Adamu stated.
Additionally, he noted that the government had pledged to implement wage awards and grant the university autonomy, demonstrating its commitment to resolving the issues that led to the strike.
The union expressed gratitude to Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, for his prompt intervention, as well as to the university management, the Commissioners for Education and Sports, and other key stakeholders for their roles in resolving the dispute.
