The Kaduna State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, has officially suspended its strike, which began on February 18.
In a statement released on Monday, the union’s chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, confirmed that the decision to call off the industrial action was reached on Saturday.
According to Adamu, the state government took immediate steps to address the concerns that led to the strike by releasing funds to settle 60 percent of the withheld salaries from September 2017, along with the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme supervision allowances for five academic sessions.
“The government demonstrated goodwill in resolving the impasse by immediately releasing funds to pay the 60 per cent of September 2017 withheld salaries and Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) supervision allowance for five sessions,” he stated.
He further disclosed that authorities have also committed to a structured timeline for settling outstanding payments, including withheld salaries from May to September 2022, promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowance, pension remittances from 2009 to 2019, death benefits, and Group Life Assurance.
“The government also agreed to a timeline for the payment of the five months, May to September 2022 withheld salaries, promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), Pension remittance (2009 to 2019), Death benefits, and Group Life Assurance,” Adamu reiterated.
Additionally, the state government pledged to implement wage awards and grant full autonomy to the institution, demonstrating a commitment to addressing the union’s concerns.
ASUU-KASU expressed its gratitude to Governor Uba Sani for his proactive leadership in resolving the crisis, as well as to the university management, the state’s education and sports commissioners, and other key stakeholders who played a role in reaching an agreement.
Dr. Adamu urged all academic staff to return to work and continue delivering essential services to the university community.
