Security operatives on Monday morning prevented journalists from accessing the Lagos State House of Assembly complex as lawmakers prepared for a crucial plenary session.
According to The PUNCH, combined team of police officers, civil defense personnel, and Lagos State Neighbourhood Security Corps officers blocked entry points around the assembly, including Mobolaji Johnson Avenue and the main gate.
Several journalists, including a reporter from The Cable, were denied access when they attempted to enter around 11 a.m. A police officer stationed at the entrance stated, “You’re not allowed to enter.” When pressed for a reason, he simply responded, “That’s the instruction. You cannot enter.”
The restriction comes amid speculation that Speaker Mojisola Meranda may step down, paving the way for Mudashiru Obasa to reclaim the leadership position.
Obasa, who was removed as Speaker on January 13, 2025, by more than 30 of the 40 lawmakers in the House, recently returned to the assembly, asserting that he remains the rightful Speaker.
The plenary, expected to address the leadership situation, is scheduled for 1 p.m.
