Israel kicked off its World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-1 win over Estonia in Debrecen, Hungary, securing an important three points.
Originally set to take place in Israel, the match was relocated due to security concerns.
Estonia struck first through Maksim Paskotsi, but an unfortunate own goal by goalkeeper Karl Jakob Hein brought Israel level. Eli Dasa then netted the decisive goal to secure the win.
Meanwhile, Norway, another team in Group I, made a strong statement with a dominant 5-0 victory over Moldova.
Norway is widely seen as the favourite to top the group, boasting stars like Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard.
Their last World Cup appearance came in 1998, two years before Haaland was born, but the team is aiming for a return to the tournament in 2026, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Israel’s next challenge comes on Tuesday, when head coach Ran Ben Shimon’s squad takes on Norway in a crucial matchup.
Only group winners will qualify directly for the World Cup, while second-placed teams will enter a play-off round for another chance at qualification.
