The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has appointed Commissioner of Police Abayomi Shogunle as the new head of the Special Intervention Squad, a key unit tasked with tackling security challenges across the country.
In addition to leading the SIS, Shogunle will oversee the Elections Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation unit and the Safe School Protection Squad, further reinforcing security measures ahead of upcoming elections and in schools nationwide.
Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the appointments in a statement on Friday, describing them as part of efforts to enhance internal security and improve the police response to violent crimes.
“CP Shogunle is a highly experienced officer with extensive expertise in operations and public relations. He will be at the forefront of addressing security concerns while also overseeing election security and the protection of schools,” Adejobi stated.
The statement also announced the appointment of CSP Chima Ogarashi as the new Force Marine Officer. Ogarashi will be responsible for boosting security along the country’s inland waterways, a critical area in combating criminal activities such as smuggling and piracy.
“As the Force Marine Officer, CSP Ogarashi will leverage his experience in maritime security and law enforcement to strengthen policing efforts on inland waterways,” Adejobi added.
The announcement comes as the Nigeria Police Force prepares to deploy 25 newly acquired gunboats and plans to expand its maritime safety capabilities with additional equipment.
The Inspector General reassured Nigerians of the police force’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property. “These strategic appointments are part of our broader efforts to tackle security threats and instill confidence in our ability to protect citizens,” Egbetokun said.
