Two major markets in Lagos, Ladipo Market in Mushin and Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road, in the early hours of Tuesday, were engulfed in flames, leading to the destruction of goods worth millions of naira.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the fire at Ladipo Market ignited around 1 a.m., rapidly consuming numerous shops and warehouses stocked with vehicle spare parts, mechanical tools, motorcycles, and household electrical appliances.
Thankfully, no casualties were reported in either incident, as confirmed by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, which worked tirelessly to bring the inferno under control by 6 a.m.
Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, stated that emergency response teams from Isolo, Bolade, and Alausa Fire Stations fought the flames at Ladipo Market despite difficulties accessing the affected areas.
Their swift intervention prevented the fire from spreading to surrounding businesses and properties.
Simultaneously, another fire broke out at Owode Onirin Market, where several shops dealing in metallic materials were affected.
Firefighters from the Alausa and Ikorodu Fire Stations responded promptly, containing the blaze by 5 a.m.
Adeseye assured the public that investigations would be carried out to determine the causes of both fires as soon as the firefighting efforts transition to the damping-down phase.
“Thankfully, no casualties were recorded in either incident. The causes of the fires will be ascertained as soon as firefighting operations progress to the next stage,” she stated.
