A newly constructed female hostel at Sokoto State University was consumed by fire on Tuesday, causing alarm within the university community.
The blaze, which erupted around 3:30 p.m., completely destroyed the building.
The PUNCH reported that the hostel had been recently built to ease the accommodation shortage faced by students.
While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, a student who witnessed the incident shared, “We don’t know what started the fire yet.”
Fortunately, there were no occupants in the hostel at the time, as students previously assigned to the facility had already been relocated following university directives.
“The students who were initially assigned to this hostel had been moved to the old hostel. Only the school authorities can explain why,” the student added.
The Students’ Union President confirmed the fire and stated that firefighters arrived at the scene by 5:00 p.m. to combat the flames.
As of now, university authorities have not released an official statement regarding the incident.
