Barcelona’s attempt to extend centre-back Iñigo Martínez’s contract has reportedly hit a roadblock due to La Liga’s financial regulations.
Martínez, who arrived at Camp Nou on a free transfer from Athletic Club in 2023, has become a key figure in Hansi Flick’s squad. Of his 29 appearances this season, 28 have been as a starter, underlining his importance in Barcelona’s defensive setup.
The experienced defender’s current deal is set to expire in the summer, but it includes a clause for a one-year extension if he plays at least 45 minutes in 60% of the club’s matches this season.
Given Barcelona’s packed schedule, including potential deep runs in both the Copa del Rey and Champions League, Martínez is well on track to meet this requirement.
According to MARCA, Barcelona have already communicated their desire to hand Martínez a fresh contract as a reward for his consistent performances under Flick.
However, their plans have been put on hold due to La Liga’s strict salary cap, which would be exceeded if the club proceeded with his renewal.
With recent contract extensions for Ronald Araújo, Pedri, Gavi, and Pau Cubarsí, Barcelona’s wage bill for the upcoming season is already stretched to its limit, leaving no financial flexibility for further renewals.
The club is currently in discussions with La Liga to explore potential solutions for registering Martínez, whose contract situation is one of two major concerns for Barcelona alongside that of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny.
